Sailing Into Memories
As I reflect on the last leg of my incredible European river cruise, I’m filled with gratitude for the unforgettable moments, breathtaking sights, and the warm holiday spirit that made this journey truly magical. The last few days brought a mix of history, adventure, and festive cheer—an experience I’m thrilled to share with you!
Day 7 – Trier: Stepping Into Ancient History
Our day began in Trier, Germany’s oldest city and a treasure trove of Roman history. The highlight was a tour of Porta Nigra, the imposing Roman city gate that has stood for nearly two millennia. Walking through its ancient arches, I felt transported back in time. Trier’s charm extended to its quaint streets and holiday markets, where the scent of mulled wine filled the air.
Day 8 – Cochem: A Castle Perched Above the Clouds
Perched high above the Moselle River, Reichsburg Castle offered sweeping views that were worth every step of the hike to reach it. The fairy-tale atmosphere of this medieval castle, coupled with its fascinating history, made it one of my favorite stops. I just love being able to do some hiking and active excursions when on a river cruise. Descending back into Cochem, I wandered its cobblestone streets for a bit, savoring the festive energy of this picturesque riverside town.
Day 9 – Cologne: A City Alive With Festivities
Cologne greeted us with its iconic cathedral, which towers majestically over the city. A walking tour through the old town led us to the enchanting Christmas markets, where every stall offered something special—from hand-carved ornaments to mouthwatering local treats. The lively atmosphere, paired with a backdrop of twinkling lights, was just so wonderful.
Day 10 – Amsterdam/Zaandam: A Taste of Holland
On this last day, I made my own plans with some of my friends I was travelling with! We were docked in Zaandam and we made our own way into Amsterdam (by train). We attended the Amsterdam Light Festival on a canal boat at night. We sailed past the important sites of the city all decorated up for Christmas, and beautiful art installations (made of light). This was a fantastic way to top off an already amazing adventure.
Day 11– Returning Home
All good things must come to an end, and it was time to disembark and head back to Canada. As I looked out at Amsterdam one last time, I was so happy to have made this journey, and I can't wait to help my clients book trips just like this one.
